First off, why does every Audi ad begin in the bowels of some shady looking parking garage? (or car park, as the Brits say). And yes, I am more than aware that is how Transporter 2 began (my personal favorite of the Audi-based Jason Statham trilogy.) Anyway, Audi’s new Clean Diesel / Audi A5 ad is a bit too much to handle. Don’t worry, there’s a twist, but it’s a bit of an extreme to promote new low-emissions tech.

Live from INGOLSTADT, (try saying that 3 times fast) Germany — Audi celebrates its 100th anniversary with art, music, futbol, and the appearance of 2010′s A5 Sportback. Sadly, the German automaker asserted that the car is “not approved for U.S. launch.”

According to Edmund’s Inside Line: The world premiere of the unnamed Audi model is designed to be the centerpiece of an elaborate four-day celebration highlighted by such events as an appearance by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the unveiling of a giant Audi TT sculpture here that the automaker said serves as a “new landmark.”

The four-passenger Audi A5 Sportback will roll into European dealerships in September, starting at the U.S. equivalent of $47,441. “A further, specially priced model to follow in 2010 will make the A5 Sportback the entry-level model in the A5 model series,” Audi said in a statement. The automaker describes the Sportback as a blend of “the best of various vehicle genres,” including a coupe, a sedan and a station wagon.

Audi said it will initially offer three turbocharged gasoline and three turbocharged TDI engines on the Sportback “with three more engines to follow by mid-2010.” They include a 180-horsepower 2.0-liter TFSI engine and a 265-hp 3.2-liter V6. Diesel offerings include a 170-hp 2.0 TDI and a 190-hp 2.7-liter TDI. Depending on the engine, the transmission choices include manual, Multitronic or seven-speed S tronic.

Options include Audi drive select dynamic control system, adaptive shock absorber control, dynamic steering and a sport differential.

Leaked Audi A5 Pictures

Some naughty person down at Audi leaked official pictures of the all new A5 Sportback – and what type of automotive resource would we be if we didn’t post em? As far as we know this first image (below) is an actual official Audi A5 photo – the car is scheduled to come out tomorrow (July 16th) during a 100 years of Audi ceremony.

According to online engine specs, the 2010 Audi A5 Sportback might include 2.0 TDI with 170hp and 350Nm of torque, the 2.7TDI with 190hp and 400Nm, the 3.0TDI with 210hp 2.0TFSI and the 3.2-liter V6.

German pricing will apparently start at €36,050.

Audi A5 Cabrio Comes to Life

There are few Cabrio’s on the road these days. Outside of Audi’s A5 you won’t see to many tiny, topless vehicles in your neighborhood (except for Volkswagen, or the two-door PT Cruiser, if you want to count that as a cabriolet). With the introduction of an all new A5, we look forward to a long, successful run for this sporty little convertible.

Audi’s promotional video shows us one sleek A5 Cabrio strolling through tight roads of some European town. The drop top is canvas, not a hard top, which separates it from the metal convertible lids many car companies go with today (unfortunately it makes the top more accessible to harsh weather damage and fading) This lid can come down in 17 seconds at speeds of up to 31 miles per hour. But is it hard to stay warm on those chilly Spring evenings with the it down? Not with Audi’s heating set up on the A5, borrowed from Mercedes-Benz, which shoots warm air at driver/passenger neckline.

Audi’s A5 Cabriolet will offer owners a choice of five different engines, including a 3.2-liter V6 265 horse power. Two different versions of the 2.0 TFSI will also be available, the entry level version produces 180 horse power, while the other pumps out 211 horse power.

A supercharged version of the A5 (Audi’s soon to be released S5) features a 3.0-liter V6 engine producing 333 horse power, allowing a 0-62 mph run of 5.6 seconds. So, whether you go for the conservative convertible or sporty roadster, it looks as though Audi will not disappoint and bring the Cabrio style car back to the forefront of driving.
